Kodama is the first album that features Indria Saray on bass in the studio, while he has played with the band live before, this was his first studio album with the band. Kodama takes a more dark approach to the band's style, while maintaining being light. In 2016, the band released their fifth studio album, Kodama. I wouldn’t say that I’m a depressive person because I’m not, but I can have darker moments, and it really helps me. It’s something that reminds you in a way of who you are, like a mirror, and convinces you to get lost." In a separate interview, he explained that "We all have things that are helping us. As described by Neige: "It’s just a safe place to escape, this secret thing we all have when life is going too fast and you are full of anxiety", adding that "This shelter could be anything - a person, a movie, music. The album takes a heavy step back from metal and takes more heavy influence from shoegaze and post-rock. In 2014, Alcest released their fourth album, Shelter. ![]() But the lyrics of the new album are really speaking about this and nothing else." All the lyrics are very clear this time because before I was speaking about this but taking other directions to avoid that stuff. ![]() (The journeys of the soul) Neige has described the album as a continuation of his effort to describe his experiences of "another world" in visions as a child, and as "an attempt to explore this very strange esoteric experience." Les Voyages is inspired by these even more than any previous album, with Neige saying that "The goal of this album was to push the concept of the band to the maximum. The same year, they released their third album, Les Voyages de l'Âme. In 2012, the band released the live album, BBC Live Session. (Translated as "Moon Scales" The album returned to more of the black metal style of Le Secret, featuring harsh vocals and an overal heavier style, while still being light overall. In 2010, they released their second album, titled Écailles de Lune. During the recording of the EP, the drummer Winterhalter joined Alcest, and made Alcest into a two-man project. In 2009, Alcest recorded a split EP with another blackgaze band, Les Discrets. The album recieved many positive reviews, and began the popularity of Alcest as a band. The album attracted more attention than the Le Secret EP, as the album had more of a shoegaze and post-rock sound than Le Secret. In 2007, they signed to Prophecy Productions, and began work on the debut album, Souvenirs d'un autre monde (Memories from another world). With this minimalist approach, Neige recorded the Le Secret EP, which began their focus torwards a blackgaze sound. Not long after, Aegnor and Argoth left the band, leaving Alcest as a one-man project again. The demo is dramatically different from the modern sound of Alcest, as it is more focused on being raw black metal. The band started as a one-man project, before two members, Aegnor (guitarist) and Argoth (bassist) joined to form a trio, and recorded a four-song demo, titled Tristesse Hivernale (Winter sadness). The band was founded and is still leaded by Neige ("Neige" means "Snow", real name: Stéphane Paut). They are regarded as pioneers of the post black metal subgenre, blackgaze, which is a mixture of black metal and shoegaze.
