![]() ![]() In the encounters, which lasted 52 and 79 minutes, the chimpanzees formed coalitions and attacked the gorillas. But then, we heard chest beats, a display characteristic for gorillas, and realized that the chimpanzees had encountered a group of five gorillas." Southern, PhD student and first author of the study, recalls the first observation in 2019: "At first, we only noticed screams of chimpanzees and thought we were observing a typical encounter between individuals of neighboring chimpanzee communities. Encounter between chimpanzees and gorillas ![]() We now want to investigate the factors triggering these surprisingly aggressive interactions," says Tobias Deschner. "Our observations provide the first evidence that the presence of chimpanzees can have a lethal impact on gorillas. Lethal encounters between the chimpanzees and gorillas have so far never been documented. Our colleagues from Congo even witnessed playful interactions between the two great ape species." "We have regularly observed both species interacting peacefully in foraging trees. “Interactions between chimpanzees and gorillas have so far been considered as relatively relaxed”, says Simone Pika. In Loango, the researchers are observing and analyzing the behavior of around 45 chimpanzees with a special focus on group composition, social relationships, interactions with neighboring groups, hunting behavior, tool use and communicative skills. This park has also been home to the Loango Chimpanzee Project since 2005, led by Tobias Deschner, a primatologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and Simone Pika, a cognitive biologist at Osnabrück University. However, this is generally lighter in younger chimpanzees and it gets darker as they get older.Chimpanzees are common in East and Central Africa and live with gorillas in some areas such as the Loango National Park in Gabon. The exposed skin of the chimp’s face, hands, and feet varies from pink to very dark. ![]() Their faces, fingers, palms and soles are all hairless. The animals have long fingers folded underneath when walking to stop the nails from getting blunt. Toes and FingersĬhimp toes are almost as long as their fingers and they have an opposable big toe for easier gripping. They must use their muscles whether they are standing or on all fours. Chimpanzees usually walk on all fours and they cannot lock their knees. The bonobo chimpanzee is a bit shorter and thinner than the common chimp, but it has longer limbs. The common chimpanzee has long arms which, when extended, can span 1.5 times the body’s height. LimbsĪ male chimp can stand up to 5.5 feet. On the other hand, the human brain has been measured as being three times larger. The brain of the chimpanzee has been measured at about 337 cc with a general range of between 282 and 500 cc. Chimpanzees have powerful canines used for killing their prey and for fighting their rival chimpanzees. A thick bone protects the eyes and extends above the relatively small braincase. Their jaws are larger and much more powerful compared to that of a human. Head and SkullĬhimpanzees have a protruding face. Although there are a variety of similarities between humans and chimpanzees, there are also many differences. This means that they have some similar physical characteristics as humans. A chimpanzee is one of our closest living relatives.
